Reviewed by Ruby Szudajski Maria Consuella is a beautiful young woman born in a very wealthy family, her father has every hope that he will betroth her to a young man of the same considerable wealth. However, Maria has own conception of marriage. She feels that marriage should only be considered if both parties love one another. She sees a young man in church at various times that she feels is someone she would like to know. They fall in love and indiscreetly spend time together, but are discovered by her mother. They are banned from the family and have to leave the town that they both love. They find a priest, marry and move to Puerto Rico where David Antonio’s uncle has offered him a position in his business. Maria Consuela's mother speaks these words to her daughter when she bans her from their home: MAY YOUR LOVE SET THE COURSE FOR YOU AND EVERY WOMAN BORN FROM YOU OR WITH YOUR BLOOD. MAY YOUR LOVE ALWAYS DRAG YOU TO THE DARKER SIDE OF LIFE, AND MAY YOUR PASSION ALWAYS BE A CURSE FOR YOU AND ALL THE WOMEN WHO DESCEND FROM YOU FOR MISERY AND DARKNESS. Before they leave for Puerto Rico, Maria’s Nana finds them and gives her the Medallion. She tells her that it had been her grandmother’s medallion and that she should always keep the medallion on her neck and that it would bring her courage and make her happy. But the curse of her mother seems to follow the girl and her descendants. Xiomara captures the history of the times an cultures of Spain while keeping the reader engaged and anxious to read the next chapter. Each descendants story is interesting, but the story of Angelica is fabulous and you will be fascinated with the ending.
