"The History of Project"

The History of South Carolina
Contributed by:
Tess Taylor
Resident of South Carolina

Charleston, SC is one of the loveliest historical cities in the Southeastern USA. The “Holy City”, as it’s called due to the numerous church steeples that scatter across the horizon, Charleston juts out into the Atlantic Ocean just between the popular tourist spots of Myrtle Beach, SC and Savannah, GA. Founded in 1670 by King Charles of England, the city was originally named “Charlestowne” but the pronunciation of the name itself was shortened by the unique dialect of the “Gullah” people of this area, made up of the descendants of European settlers and African American slaves.

Charleston is known as being one the busiest port cities in the Southeastern USA with a massive bay system fed by the Ashley River and Cooper River. Recently, a brand new multi-billion dollar bridge was built across the Cooper River replacing the original bridges to expand both the tourism and trade in this region. Charleston is also the site of many famous battles of the US Civil War, with Fort Moultrie, the site of the final history making fight between the North and South, nestled just inside the Charleston bay.  A drive through the Charleston area will take you through such famous places as “Rainbow Row”, a series of houses painted in fabulous colors of the rainbow. One may also want to explore the mainland where there are several internationally acclaimed plantations and gardens, such as Magnolia Plantation which has been called the “most beautiful garden in the world”.

Charleston is most famous for being a cultural hub of the Southeast with events like “Piccolo Spoleto”, a month-long annual arts festival that brings artists and performers from around the world.  Of course Charleston is well known for its wonderful people including many celebrities that were born and raised here or those that come for the region’s booming film industry. You can catch glimpses of this beautiful area in such movies as “The Notebook” or “The Patriot” and TV programs like “Army Wives”. Overall, Charleston, SC is one of the nicest cities to visit in the Southeastern USA so feel free to come on down ya’ll and enjoy the hospitality that Charleston can offer!
